Patcham: Downland village to Brighton estate

September 25, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Geoffrey Mead’s book on Patcham will be based on collections of photographs accompanied by extended captions.

The book will include a section on the old village, but Geoffrey has also written about the area of Patcham built between the wars. Recently he has been researching the plotland at Sweet Hill.

If you can contribute photographs, house plans, sales brochures, maps or any visual material please add you comments.

The Lost Gardens of London Road

September 23, 2006 · 1 Comment

The Lost Gardens of London Road is the first in our series of Walk & Talk books – expected publication date July 2007.

A group of interested people are researching the area of Brighton from St Peter’s church running north to Viaduct Road, and from London Road in the west (though we include some of the streets around St Bartholomew’s church which have been demolished), to The Level – with its interesting political history – in the east.

One of the chapters will be devoted entirely to the gardens with contemporary accounts, and lists of the plants in the gardens with photographs, botanical drawings and original prints.

Many changes are at present taking place in London Road, as a result of the closure of the Co-op department store in May 2007, the proposed redevelopment of the Open Market and the continuing development of the Brighton station site.

If you would like to get involved please get in touch by linking to our main site.

We will show them to you in this book and you will be as surprised as we were when we first saw them.
