I’ve just read the above book and noticed that my father’s tailor shop is featured on page 30. We lived above the shop and I thought we were the last family to leave the street/area. My mother held out for more compensation, as the Council were only prepared to rehouse us into a council flat. I was 12 at the time and have awful memories of being the only house standing on the street at one stage, our neighbouring houses having already been demolished.
My father was the tailor mentioned on page 30: ….”There was a tailor who had invested his life savings in the shop….an income just bid enough to live on”.
My father never really recovered from the ignominy of being forced to leave. This was more poignant, as he was a refugee from Nazi Germany who had spent 20 years trying to rebuild his life.
Do you have any documents from the archives of the meetings which took place over compensation with the Council? I would be v interested to see what conversations took place between my family (Heimann no 44 Grenville Place) and the Council- or perhaps you can point me in the right direction?

I am a writer of childrens and teen novels, please do check out my website to see the synopsis of all my stories. This is a lovely and colourful site. I believe that these stories would make fabulous viewing, which the entire family would enjoy. Having talent as a writer is one thing, however finding a publisher to consider the work is no easy task. Especially an unknown author. Gee, does anyone ever give anyone a chance these days. God didn’t give me this talent for nothing. Someone out there needs to take a look at these stories and consider them, please. Thank you. Who know I might just get a lucky break. God willing.
